Cremation Services and The Race To The Bottom.

Competion is generally a good thing to keep businesses strong and on their feet. However, too much of a good thing can pull everyone, including the quality of services offered down Into an abyss.

In an era where traditions are fading, inexperience is acceptable and bad services are expected, it’s safe to assume that these poor qualities will or have already leaked into funeral and cremation services.

Today, pop up funeral service shops are opening up near you. Most of these places have no intentions of being here tomorrow. By design they offer similar services but fall short in experience and industry standards. With low cost comes a gentle balance that must be managed properly. A firm will have little room for errors, bad reviews or unhappy client families, but we are all human and chances are one or all are bound to happen at some point.

Competitors racing to the bottom are putting those they service In an odd position. People May feel a sense of cheapness that they are getting a “no frills“ cremation for mom. Especially when the cost is a thousand dollars less than others they may have called. In some cases, the costs are so distant it almost seams unrealistic.

Racing to to the bottom also hurts the spirit of good completion. A cremation provider needs a good source of income to continue to offer superior services to their clients. When everyone around them drops the price of cremation to the consumer, the costs of operations for the provider will stay the same. This narrows the profit margin to dangerously low levels. Therefore, a firm will slowly face financial Instabilities, lose quality of staff and begin to build debts. This may seem good for customers, but is it really when the good guy gets washed away by a fly by night? Then, dad dies. But, by that time your local cremation provider has locked up shop and hangs their out of business sign. Your only choice now is some low ball business with inexperienced associates, lack of professionalism and a let’s make a deal mentality. If you think this is far fetched. Think again. It’s happening everywhere.

So, who’s to blame? The funeral homes? The Cremation providers? The clients? Well, it’s all of the above. Funeral homes have charged themselves out of the picture. Cremation providers are missing the signs on the wall that are clearly marked from the mistakes of the funeral homes. The clients, they are just consumers because that’s what the market has pushed them to be. They now choose price over experience and google searches over professionalism. Equally, they are all accountable for some part of these trends. Family named funeral homes no longer mean a thing. Yet, cremation companies are keeping the race to the bottom strong. It will only be a matter of time before the bubble bursts and clients are back at the drawing board paying higher fees than ever before once the dust settles. Why? Because cremation providers being eliminated now is good for the customer, yet, in due time the market share will shrink and future prices will be determined by supply and demand balance will not exist As it did before.
